Selfspace is an exhibition of watercolors that depict the domestic interior spaces I have inhabited over the years. These spaces were provisional homes: places I moved on from after a short period, only to enter the next transitional space. I paint solely with watercolor and draw images with watercolor pencil, weaving a feeling of ephemerality and temporality into my paintings with these fluid media. The nature of watercolor aids my explorations of liminality, or the “in-between,” as the medium itself seems to exist between states of being; even once it dries, it can still be changed and affected by water. The exhibition displays watercolors on canvas and paper, following images of interiors that overlap or become interrupted by paint. The medium of watercolor paint transforms these interiors into liminal spaces, rather than simply places of comfort and safety. “In-betweens” emerge from new forms made by overlapping images or through abstract mark-making that become the folds and shadows of fabric. A space like the Cohen Gallery provides an intimate yet open place for artworks that embody liminality. The building itself feels in-between the institution of Alfred University and the town of Alfred itself, a house-turned-gallery existing as both public and private, residential and commercial. I want my work to comfortably inhabit this house the way a person might settle into their bedroom after a long day. Selfspace aims to emphasize this relationship to interior spaces, to show how we are changed by the spaces we inhabit, however temporarily, and in turn how those places are changed by us.
