Presence, 2024, watercolor and watercolor pencil on canvas, 39 in. x 27 in. Presence marks a significant moment in my practice in terms of freedom of movement. Starting with a watercolor pencil sketch and a surface of watercolor gesso I mixed with cerulean pigment, I allowed watercolor to blend into itself or bleed around the canvas, making more decisive marks and divorcing myself from pressure to achieve a “perfect end goal” with an image devoid of the presence of the figure or architecture. Working on this painting kept me from going back over marks and trying to “fix” or “perfect” anything, instead allowing each mark to exist as its own experiment.

Intimate Enough Not to Notice, 2024, watercolor and watercolor pencil on canvas, 47 in. x 31 in. Intimate Enough Not to Notice starts with a watercolor pencil sketch and a surface of watercolor gesso I mixed with pigment. I utilize a single layer of decisive marks and washes, and allow watercolor to blend and bleed similarly to Presence, but this time grounding marks to function as communication of a space or a solid image.
